N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a supplement form of cysteine, a semi-essential amino acid (protein building block) that is produced naturally in the body from other amino acids.
Consuming foods that are sources of cysteine is important for a number of health reasons, primarily for assisting in the production of the most powerful antioxidant in the body, glutathione, which works to neutralize the free radicals that can damage cells and tissues in the body and plays a role in heavy metal detoxification. The body also uses cysteine to produce taurine, a critical amino acid.
Cysteine can be found in high-protein foods like chicken, turkey, cheese, yogurt, eggs, sunflower seeds, and legumes.
NAC has a high affinity for lung tissue, which it supports through mucolytic and antioxidant action.
Glutathione production: NAC is a precursor to the antioxidant glutathione. Lymphocytes, specific components of the immune system, rely on glutathione to function properly. Supplemental NAC increases tissue levels of glutathione. Tissues enhanced with glutathione support overall antioxidant protection and help to maintain a healthy immune response.
Heavy metal detoxification: Several studies suggest that NAC may help to reduce mercury and cadmium accumulation in the kidneys and liver, and/or moderate the effects of these metals in these tissues, by promoting healthy glutathione levels or by protecting tissues from cell damage generated by heavy metals.
Immune and respiratory system health: NAC is a powerful free radical scavenger and supports epithelial cell health and healthy cilia activity in the respiratory tract. When mucus thickens, it can become difficult to expel. Due to its sulfur content, NAC is able to disrupt disulfide bonds, thinning the mucus so that it is more easily expelled from the lungs, along with trapped particles and bacteria.
