Known as the “pain” or “stress” amino acid, D,L-Phenylalanine is a 50/50 combination of the D and L forms of phenylalanine.
L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that is converted to tyrosine. It is a precursor to the thyroid hormone. L-Phenylalanine helps support the normal production of mood-elevating chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and norepinephrine.
D-Phenylalanine helps to naturally reduce pain signals in the nervous system. The D form converts readily to the L form in the liver. The combination of the two forms may help support a balanced mood and address physical discomforts.
Insufficient activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine is a central element of the model of depression most widely held by neurobiologists today. The synthesis of most neurotransmitters is controlled within the brain, and for some neurotransmitters, the amount of biochemical precursors present in the brain can influence their rate of synthesis. Because phenylalanine is a precursor for neurotransmitter production, it can support the maintenance of a balanced mood.
Studies have shown that DL-Phenylalanine binds to glutamate AMPA receptors, which improve the communication between synapses in the brain. This can have the effect of increasing memory speed and learning ability, and promoting increased mental energy and focus.
