TMG assists the metabolization of homocysteine into methionine, which is needed for the production of dimethylglycine (DMG). The two major functions of TMG in humans are as an osmolyte to protect cells under stress and as a methyl-group donor.
Trimethylglycine (TMG) functions closely with choline, folic acid, vitamin B12, and S-adenosylmethionine (a form of the amino acid methionine). All of these compounds function as methyl donors, carrying and donating methyl molecules to facilitate necessary chemical processes. The donation of methyl groups by TMG is important for proper liver function, cellular replication, detoxification reactions, and in the manufacture of carnitine.
Also called betaine, TMG is an amino acid derivative that occurs in plants.
