Vitamin B3 occurs naturally in the body in two forms, niacin (nicotinic acid) and niacinamide (nicotinamide), which can be made from niacin in the body.
At least 200 enzymes depend on vitamin B3 cofactors (helpers). Vitamin B3 is a precursor to NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (NAD phosphate), metabolically active coenzymes that play important roles in the electron-transport chain and in oxidation reduction reactions.
Niacinamide performs most of the same essential biochemical functions of niacin and helps to prevent niacin deficiency. Symptoms of niacin deficiency can include memory loss and dementia, mental confusion, fatigue, headaches, diarrhea, skin problems, and depression.
Independent of its primary function in the body as NAD or NADP, niacinamide may support healthy skin and joints and the proper metabolism of glucose in the body.
