Niacin, also known as vitamin B3 and in this form as nicotinic acid, is an important nutrient; one that every part of the human body needs to function properly. As with all B vitamins, niacin helps convert food into energy by aiding enzymes, specifically NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (NAD phosphate), two coenzymes that are involved in cellular metabolism.
This form of niacin may be prescribed supplementally to help reduce LDL cholesterol levels and to lessen the risk of heart disease by helping to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are involved in atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
While niacin deficiency is rare in developed countries, it can occur. Some of the symptoms of niacin deficiency are memory loss and dementia, mental confusion, fatigue, headaches, diarrhea, skin problems, and depression.
Warning: Niacin can cause serious side effects when taken in large doses. Do not take more than 1.5 grams per day without first consulting with your healthcare professional.
