Lipoic acid, often called alpha-lipoic acid (or α-lipoic acid) and also known as thioctic acid, is a naturally occurring compound that is found in all human cells. It is synthesized naturally in the body, acting as an antioxidant and helping enzymes turn nutrients into energy from within the mitochondria (aka, the powerhouses of the cell). Alpha-lipoic acid is both water- and fat-soluble, which allows it to work in every cell or tissue in the body.
However, lipoic acid is made in small amounts by the body, and consuming it through diet is the only way to raise the levels of lipoic acid in the body and increase its potential benefits. There are some food sources for lipoic acid, but supplements can pack up to 1,000 times more alpha-lipoic acid than one can get from food.
The antioxidant properties of alpha-lipoic acid have been linked to many benefits, including aiding in liver detoxification, maintenance of blood sugar levels, reduced inflammation, support for energy production in muscles, slowed skin aging, and improved nerve function.
Liver detoxification: Alpha-lipoic acid is a strong antioxidant that helps lower the level of liver enzymes and maintain balanced enzyme levels.
Blood sugar levels: Alpha-lipoic acid can help lower blood sugar by promoting the processes that remove fat that has accumulated in muscle cells.
Reduced inflammation: As an antioxidant that is present in all of your cells, alpha-lipoic-acid attacks unwanted molecules called free radicals‚ which are produced when food is broken down to create energy and which can trigger damaging chemical reactions within your cells.
Energy production: Alpha-lipoic acid is a necessary component of the glucose-pyruvate-ATP pathway, creating energy production from calories.
Improved nerve function: Alpha-lipoic acid’s antioxidant properties play an important role in nerve function and supporting healthy vision. It is proven to ease symptoms of nerve damage and lower the risk of diabetic retinopathy (eye damage).
